But a terrible storm overtook him with estimated wind downbursts of 138 miles per hour. Fighting for his life and that of his boat, the 20-foot home-built Persistence, the author survived numerous capsizes and a near pitchpole in the storm of the century -- a classic battle of one man against the inland sea.
