the long version
Serteller tells the story of two successful journalists and writers who gave direction to thoughts, feelings and innovations during the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of Turkey. It tells the story of Sabiha and Zekeriya Sertel. Sabiha and Zekeriya Sertel published best-selling magazines and newspapers between 1911 and 1978, and wrote many books. Many democratic, progressive and socialist intellectuals and writers of the country, especially Nâzım Hikmet, Suat Derviş, Sabahattin Ali, Nail Çakırhan, worked in these publications and their books were published by Serteller. Under Serteller, the Tan newspaper strongly opposed rising German fascism, local Nazi collaborators and the oppressive one-party governments of the time, defending multi-party democracy, freedom of thought and human rights. Serteller deals with the birth, rise and stumbling moments of a country, a society, in parallel with the struggle-filled bitter life story of Sabiha and Zekeriya Sertel, who personally experienced them as involved and victim.
