After devastating interstellar war, the planet Morkath has dropped to preindustrial technological level and a feudal government. The Flanage lands in particular are a hotbed of conflict among petty city-states and their ambitious tyrants, one of whom plans grand conquest. Jamnar, exiled lord Valzar of the barbarous Northlands, is rescued from the sea and reduced to slavery. He must earn his freedom and eventually find a way to return to his homeland.
