"In the stories, we see a teacher, husband, father, colleague, friend -- alone or in exchange with other characters -- and we get snapshots of each and all. We see family life and interactions in and around Carthay Circle, a neighborhood in the heart of the city. Beyond that area, we see glimpses of colleagues. In the more lyrical, elliptical, and elusive poems, we see others that we sense were close -- even though we may not be certain of the connection.
