the long version
PHONICS THE AFRICAN WAY with its Aid to Helpers Brochure lets its users SEE how the written word works & KNOW that it can be mastered. Developed with Homework Assistance Program (HAP) children at the Langston Hughes Community Library & Cultural Center, approved for NYSTL & Other Than NYSTL & was the subject of a contract awarded by the New York City Board of Education, the workbook/text is relevant to beginning readers, non-readers & poor readers. Beginning readers can get a good foundation in phonics--the bridge between the written & the spoken word. Older readers can ponder a phonics problem until aha! occurs & the bridge is repaired. Using an already known find-a-word puzzle format, PHONICS THE AFRICAN WAY is easy to understand & fun to work with. Once its user understands how to find & SAY the words presented in the first puzzle, he or she can successfully complete all the puzzles. Also, the technique for extracting letter sounds from known words lets its user further realize that he or she knows much already. Additionally, the user-helper relationship encourages self-discipline & a collective spirit of people working together & helping each other--truly an unorthodox, confidence building, learning experience.
