Felicity's young brother Trevor had always come first with her - and never more so than now, when he had developed an eye disease which might well make him blind within a very short time. So she was thrilled when she got the chance of a job at the clinic on the tiny island of Isola Rossa in the Adriatic where Burne Mallory was the eye specialist - and she and Trevor set off with new hope in their hearts. But Burne very soon became more than her brother's doctor to her, in spite of the warnings of his nurse, Isobel (who was possibly not without self-interest in the matter). Felicity knew in her heart that Isobel was right, that she must be far from being the first girl in Burne's life and must not take his attentions seriously. All the same .. .
