the long version

The 12th century peace between France and England depends upon Aalis de Sainte' Noire and his arranged marriage. Rebelling against the marriage, he fleas north to the Cathedral of Chartres and the courts of Maria de Champagne. Initially Aalis enjoys the playful, amorous atmosphere but soon discovers a sinister side caused by the nuns of Cister and the king's secret pacts.
