This is Swaledale 1812 and Hollings Hall is the home of Sir Leonard Piercy, the owner of vast mineral rights. His 16-year-old daughter Judith, the beauty of the family, is betrothed to the fortune hunting Harold Metcalfe. However, Judith well knows she could not bear to spend the rest of her life at his side. Equally she is undecided about the proposal from her brother Gerard's friend Harvey. Then Devlin Farrar, a geologist, appears on the scene and his very mysteriousness acts as a magnet to Judith. But there are many questions to be answered and doubts to be resolved before Judith's problems can disappear and she can find the happiness she sought for so long.
