the long version
A history of ichthyology in Arkansas, with a lengthly section on Arkansas fishes and the environment, is followed by species accounts subdivided by family. Each species account includes characters, life colors, similar species, variation and taxonomy (may or may not be present), distribution, and habitat and biology (may include some historical aspects). Each species account includes a photograph, either black and white or color; the authors' selection is extremely well done. There are keys to species, and characters used are illustrated with excellent drawings. The literature has been thoroughly searched and a complete literature cited is included. There is an index to "fish names and taxonomy." One of the best state studies this reviewer has examined, this book is strongly recommended for all libraries in Arkansas and for universities with activity in ichthyology. Because of the key structure and excellent diagrams, it would be easily usable by anyone with basic knowledge in biology. K. L. Williams Northwestern State University of Louisiana--Choice Reviews.
