the long version
Set in Hull at the beginning of the Blitz, Annie tells the story of young Marie Larsen, a nurse in the Hull Royal Infirmary. When one day her father is killed and her mother is injured during an air raid, only Marie is left to look after her young brother and sister, Pamela and Alfie. Marie knows that the safest place for them is at their evacuation posts away from the bombings in Hull, but when she discovers that Alfie is bitterly unhappy with his foster family, she faces a heart-wrenching decision. Should she bring her siblings home, where she can keep them happy but their lives will be in danger, or should she leave them where they are, to suffer at the hands of their foster family?
