Blood Over Badge

the long version

"San Francisco homicide detective, Jack Paige, has to break in a new partner, rookie Casey Ford. This initiation turns into a baptism of fire when the murder of the Mayor's daughter falls into their laps. Along with the body they find plenty of clues, but the more they learn about the murderer, the more elusive he becomes. The pressure is already on when they get a letter from convict Kyle Sanders serving a life sentence halfway across the continent in Louisiana, he tells them just enough to show that he knows far more. Kyle's letter is the starting gun in the race of their lives."--Page 4 of cover.
