"As a freshman at all-Mormon BYU, Marguerite Farnsworth signs a pledge not to drink, or have sex out of wedlock. Shy and bookish, she's never been tempted to do any of these things until she comes home for the summer and meets John Haberman, an atheist philosophy student who claims he doesn't believe in morals at all. Marguerite and John spend the summer arguing about whether God exists and falling in love.
