the long version

This is the tale of Jemima., and all who fail to fall to her quaint charms have assuredly hearts of stone. With her originality of speech and action, her overflowing sympathy, her impulsiveness and her sense of humour, she makes quite the most delightful little character of recent fiction. Jemima is the youngest of five sisters, and is always planning other people's happiness and loving them. When an unpopular invitation descends upon their suburban home to pay a visit to Northumberland, it is Jemima who goes, little thinking how utterly the life is going to suit her. In the spacious Northumberland farmhouse she meets two young farm students, and the tale of her unselfish planning and plotting for the happiness of her sisters, together with charming descriptions of the glorious countryside, make a novel possessing that rare quality of being able to cheer the most jaded reader who is in search of something good.
