Apprentice investigator Cybil Quindt, on the trail of an embezzler, goes undercover as a teller in a small town bank. Unlike her previous case, which escalated from petty theft to murder, Cybil is certain her newest case will be a safe and simple assignment--much to the delight of both her mother and her estranged husband. However, days after Cybil begins at the bank, one of the other tellers is found dead. The authorities rule the death a suicide, but when Cybil is assigned to deal with the dead woman's estate, the investigator uncovers secrets which contradict the official verdict. Cybil suspects foul play and once again throws herself into an investigation marked by blackmail, murder, and mayhem.
