Nineteen chapters based on oral history interviews conducted and edited by David Giffey with veterans of wars beginning with a volunteer in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade fighting the fascists in the Spanish Civil War in 1937, and including all American wars and conflicts to follow through Afghanistan and Iraq. All the veterans (four now deceased) were members of Veterans for Peace, so their stories describe the transformations from soldiers to peace activists. The foreword is by Howard Zinn.
