Harold Ernest Kelly was born in London, the first son of a hatter. In the 1920s he worked as a freelance journalist. In 1931 he teamed up with a fellow journalist to start a weekly newspaper called City Mid-Week. In it, he published weekly character sketches of London types such as a postman, a bell-ringer, a beadle, etc. These sketches were later collected into a book called London Cameos (1952). In 1932 the paper was sued for libel and folded. …
