"Marshal Rance Toller is locking up a pair of troublemakers when Angie Sutter, a homesteader from a nearby valley, arrives with the news that her husband was murdered that morning. Whilst Rance has qualms about heading out into the frozen wasteland, leaving only an ageing [sic] deputy to stand guard, he accompanies Angie to her cabin--to find not only Jacob Sutter's body, but also that of his neighbor, slain by the same weapon.
