the long version
"This archaeological and historical research on the South-East of Gaul during the Iron Age and the Roman period assesses the implantation of cultic places and their relationships with natural and anthropogenic space based on human geographical and anthropological perspectives. This new approach has allowed a fresh perspective founded on three important themes: natural geosymbols, memorial geosymbols (places of memory), and the sanctuary as a geosymbol. This symbolic reading of landscape and the historical reading of space precede a reversal in our perspective: the place of worship develops a role in the appropriation of the territory and becomes a spatial marker. This study, informed by other notions ("liminality," polarization and spatial dynamics), has developed new hypotheses in the reflection on ancient perception of the landscape through a dynamic and diachronic reading that analyzes the importance of places of worship in space"--
