In 1817, 31 men left Virginia for a hunting expedition. They discovered gold, and silver in a southern section of what is now Colorado. They brought two deposits of treasure back to Virginia, one in 1819, and another in 1821. They hid these deposits in an underground vault and headed back to Colorado for more. These adventurers were never heard from again and were thought to have been killed by hostile Native Americans.
