"...Some eleven hundred black Americans-men, women, and children; some slave, some freedmen, some freeborn; most from Maryland-did emigrate to Cape Palmas between 1833 and 1856...They went to Africa for precisely the same reasons that inspired the westward movement of European settlers across North America: cheap or free land, economic opportunity, the chance to live, think, and worship in freedom, and the prospect that succeeding generations wuld have better lives.
