When her sister Sarah's marriage breaks up, Meriel Maynard abandons her happy London life and takes Sarah and her young daughter, Jasmine, to help out at their aunt's country guest house, hoping Sarah will benefit from a change of scene. Meriel soon becomes interested in a local Academy of Art and Music - and in its Director, the difficult and strangely attractive Rex Hazelwood. She somehow finds herself heavily embroiled in Rex's campaign to save the failing Academy, and in his disturbing family conflicts.
