With reference to Orissa, India; articles contained in this book are previously published in various edited books and social science journals namely Man in India, The Eastern Anthropologist, Adivasi, Banaja, Orissa Review, The Orissa Historical Research Journal, The Oriental Anthropologist and the like. Some of these papers were written in response to specific invitation to contribute. These essays were written over a period of fifteen years. In the mean time, views of the author have naturally undergone a certain amount of change. But the author has held himself back from making any except minor alterations in the essays. In the reproduction of these essays only minor editorial changes have been made from the original texts.
