The stories and descriptions of 19 of the worst historic rail disasters, between 1833 and 1958. The book was compiled largely from contemporary accounts in local and national newspapers, with sketches and photographs included. Also included are descriptions of the lessons learned, and the changes made in both equipment and operating rules, with documented improvement in safety that followed.
