The Bicentennial Commission of Connecticut authorized several scholars to write monograms on the broadly defined Revolutionary Era of 1763 to 1787. "Emphasis was to be placed on the birth of the nation rather than on the winning of independence on the field of battle". To this effort Hayes has compiled through official records and writings a most intriguing picture of military life and the struggle to win mixed with Washington's Spy efforts and the betrayal by Benedict Arnold.
