This work explores the emergence of enlightened post-industrial riverfronts and harbor edges in Europe and the U.S. from centuries of industrial and other economic exploitation, transitioning to enlightened, publicly accessible, environmentally and economically sustainable, revitalized waterfronts with parks and greenways coexisting successfully with marketplace, residential, and institutional evolution, typically in mixed use, on the other. Locales examined: The Arno/Florence, The Canals/Venice, Amstel and the Canals/Amsterdam, Seine/Paris, Seine+Oise+Marne/Paris Region, Saone+Rhone/Lyons, Limmat+Sihl/Zurich, Thames/London, Lea/London, Ruhr/Ruhr Region, Rhine+Meuse/Rotterdam, Tyne/Tyneside, Potomac/Washington, D.C., Hudson/New York.
