When Gilbert Meredith jilted her, all Lorna wanted was to get away as far from him as possible - so she jumped at the chance of going to Scotland to look after charming old Mrs. Lamond. But she soon discovered that the old lady was not nearly as charming as she had at first seemed; she was using Lorna in the most ruthless way, declaring that she was going to leave her all her vast fortune - something Lorna didn't want in the least, when it was going to cause such distress to Mrs. Lamond's relatives.
