"I continued to climb until I reached the spot where I was to meet Craig, near the neat piles of felled trees. From my vantage point I had a superb view of the young Laird’s estate. Quite nearby I heard a noise. Not a natural sound of the great Highlands forest: this was like a soft footfall, a pebble crunched beneath a shoe. I glanced around, but everything was still once more. Suddenly the quiet was broken by a curious squealing, a protesting noise. In a horrifying split second I realized that the great pile of logs was falling.... Incredibly, I was spared....Yet now I was absolutely certain someone was determined to drive me away from Glengarron, and would even murder to achieve this end."
