A setting of both tremendous economic opportunity and lagging economic development, a corner of Europe closest to the turbulent Middle East, and a crossroads of three major civilizations, Southeastern Europe poses challenges of unparalleled complexity to security planners in the United States and throughout the West. At the pivot of this uncertain setting stands the bilateral U.S.-Greek relationship, itself a critical dimension of the stake of the broader Atlantic Alliance in the security of the region. After a period of turmoil and mutual distrust during the decade of the 1980s, in recent years the Greek-U.S. tie has emerged as a key factor in the accomplishment of broader U.S. regional objectives.
