Lovell (politics, U. of South Wales and Australian Defence Force Academy) presents ten chapters that look at the transition of the post-communist states of Europe from within the broader theoretical framework of "democratization." The first few contributions look at broad theoretical issues such institutional experience with direct democracy, theories of state-transformation, and democratization and civil society. The remainder of the papers look apply such considerations to examinations of Russia, Azerbaijan, Poland, and Germany.
