the long version

Children learn and cannot be "taught" in the usually accepted sense of that term. This text addresses the complexity and interrelatedness of the factors which influence children's learning readiness and perceptions, in four sections, beginning with how learning, development, and adjustment are individual matters which take place in a group context in which persons at home, other children at school, and the teacher all play important parts. To understand pupils as individual, developing persons, teachers must possess a wide variety of skills, and an even greater store of knowledge. A theoretical foundation for an explanation of human development, behavior, and adjustment is provided, but is not written in stone. The final section describes how school systems could implement a better educative process, in practical stages.
