The Lagan Canal made the River Lagan navigable from Belfast to Lough Neagh, a distance of 27 miles along the borders of Antrim and Down and a portion of Armagh. Construction began in 1756 and was completed in 1796. The purpose of the canal was to deliver goods at a reasonable price to rural communities. After 1910 trade gradually decreased until 1954 when the Lagan Navigation Company was dissolved. .
