This book contains the proceedings of a lively international workshop which showed that interest in the field of DIET is strong and that many questions still remain to be answered. Many participants came from new and rapidly advancing fields ranging from gas phase dynamics to semiconductor processing. The resulting cross-fertilization is playing an important role in improving understanding of desorption processes at solid surfaces. The work contained in this volume is an excellent summary of the current status of the field and should be a valuable reference text for both seasoned researchers and newcomers to the field of DIET. Contributions include state-of-the-art work in surface science, gas phase chemistry, biophysics, and astrophysics. These are divided into six major categories including gas phase processes, desorption of neutrals and negative ions, ESDIAD, new developments in theory, DIET from insulators, and finally, DIET spectroscopy. These proceedings also contain valuable information on a new generation of experimental techniques, including the utilization of lasers, synchrotrons, digital imaging, electron-ion coincidence, and neutral particle detection.
