the long version

Lazarsfeld was considered the preeminent woman representative of the Adlerian school of psychotherapy. Between the two World Wars, she worked in the Marriage Advice Bureaux in Vienna, conducted by the school of Alfred Adler, which existed for about ten years before being shut down by the Nazis. Although this book was published in the 1960s, it is based on the work done during this time with patients seen in person as well as consulted via correspondence, including a column in a Viennese newspaper with responses to inquiry letters. The Bureaux was quite forward thinking for the time, even for modern times, because the institution was set up for women to treat women. Accordingly, Dr. Lazarsfeld also believed that this book must be written by a woman, must be based on experience and data, and must not be directed against men.
