McCulloch and commanded from January 1863 to June 1864 by Major General John G. Walker. The unit was the backbone of the forces of the Trans-Mississippi West, serving primarily in Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana, and provided the major opposition to General N.P. Banks' invasion of Louisiana.
