Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates has developed a body of work that includes space development, object-making, performance, and critical engagement with many publics. Together with members of The Black Monks of Mississippi, a music ensemble, he used a two-week residency and so-called "monastic retreat" at the Serralves Foundation in Porto to further develop their collective practice.
