Lee’s Sharpshooters is William Dunlop’s’ enthralling chronicle of his command over Robert E. Lee’s strategic sharpshooter battalion during the Civil War. Dunlop recounts the training processes; the ordnance tests and the marksmanship exercises the soldiers went through to become skilled and confident skirmishers. These innovative units didn’t turn the tide of the war, but did give rise to the specialized soldier whose “intelligence, marksmanship and unfaltering courage” was remarkable.
