Two elderly hog farmers, who lived close to New Dresden, had accumulated substantial wealth. They purchased a computer, and hired Tom Hastings to help them learn how to use it. One of the brothers was killed in a train/pickup crash, which Hastings witnessed from the sidewalk. Some of the people of the area, including Hastings, didn't believe that the crash was an accident.
