the long version
This important work is believed to be the first continuous study on this subject from the Anglo-American colony of Virginia in the early 1600's to the end of American participation in Vietnam in the 1970's. As such, it is a synthesis of new research as well as a reinterpretation of American wars that involved compulsory military service. Related activity such as desertions, substitutions, commutation fees, bounties and bounty jumpers, and exemptions and deferments are discussed in detail. Concluding observations with an overview of the issue are offered in the last chapter.
