London, 1649. Charles I has been beheaded. Oliver Cromwell is running the country and a law has been passed stating that any unmarried woman who conceals the death of her child is guilty of murder. When a baby is found buried in the woods, all fingers point to Rachel Lockyer, an unmarried glovemaker who has been locked in a passionate love affair with political agitator William Walwyn. With William in the Tower, Rachel was alone, and - although no one is certain that she was actually pregnant - she is arrested. There's not much one woman can do against the might of Cromwell's court, and as her trial draws to its inevitable conclusion, Rachel's is not the only life that will change for ever ...
