In 1875 railwayman Tom Swales, with his wife and five daughters, takes the tiny end cottage in a terrace by the newly-built York-Doncaster railway track. Eldest daughter Mary becomes housemaid to the stationmaster, where she battles the grime from passing trains and the stationmaster's brutal, lustful nature - a fight she cannot win.
