For the past thousand years the Gypsies have been roaming the face of the earth. Despised outcasts, often hunted down like animals, sold as slaves, and even, in our century, systematically annihilated in Hitler's gas chambers, they have nevertheless managed to survive, thanks to their incredible resilience, adaptability and ingenuity. The great majority still live on the periphery of established society off the crumbs of the rich, eking out a living as musicians, entertainers, fortune-tellers, horse traders, tinkers and beggars.
