Newcomers don't last long in remote Lochdubh - banished mostly to boredom, dampness and nosy neighbours. But artist Effie Garrand seems set to stay; following a particularly harsh winter local bobby Hamish Macbeth finds her still in residence, convinced she's still engaged to local artist Jock Fleming. So, when Effie is found dead of hemlock poisoning, no one knows if it's suicide or murder.
