No Tears for the General

The letters of Alfred Sully printed for the first time in this book, offer a vivid word picture of California during its gold rush period, of the Minnesota frontier in the 1850s, of the peninsula campaign of the Civil War, of the Sioux uprising of the 1860s. They also provide a medium for a sizable number of the hundred-odd paintings and sketches that Sully prepared during his travels that give us a fresh look at many of the scenes and people described in the letters.
