The great innovation of Sunset over the Islands is that the author has used post Cold-War literature on globalisation to redefine the purpose and value of Caribbean Studies. Andres Serbin focuses on the problems facing the Caribbean region in the changing circumstances of the new world order and the trend towards a global economy. He considers the changes in regional identities, economic structures and the geopolitical situation, and explores social and socio-political issues. Special attention is paid to the creation, in 1994, and development of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) and its importance in the regional trend towards integration.
