The Chess of China by Dennis Leventhal is a compact handbook for playing the ancient board game of Chinese chess. Chinese chess pieces are typically wooden disks similar to checkers pieces but are marked with Chinese symbols denoting the status of the pieces as in Western chess. The peieces do not move from square to square but rather from intersection to intersection as in the Chinese board game Go.Six chapters cover the history of the game, the units: the general, the guard, the militia, the cavalry, the chariot, the field artillery, and the infantry. Other chapters cover the battlefield, the moves, the action, and the philosophy. There are also 7 Appendices containing short stories from ancient China relating to the game.
