[The book] is an intermediate-to-advanced Spanish textbook designed to develop writing proficiency and critical thinking through reading and discussion of representative literary texts from Spain and Spanish-speaking America. The program aims to return reading and writing to a more central place in the Spanish language curriculum while continuing to promote oral proficiency development. [The text] is suitable for second- or third-year college Spanish or for an Advanced Placement Spanish curriculum in the secondary school. The text focuses on teaching students strategies with which to read a literary selection, analyze it for meaning, and finally react to it in personal ways, providing ample opportunity for creative expression. Thus, it guides students in their understanding of the reading selections at the textual and at the cultural level, while helping them to appreciate the diversity as well as the unifying forces of [cont. in TofC].
