This is the second in Zola’s multi volume series of novels scrutinising social, family, business and political life in 19th century France, Les Rougon-Macquart. Recounting the avaricious lust for wealth displayed at that time the narrative circles around the reconstruction of Paris under Baron Haussmann during the 1850’s and 60’s.
