the long version

The second title in the Codesria Gender Series, which aims to invigorate the African social sciences with debates that challenge conventional wisdom, received ideologies and gender stereotypes, and to showcase the best in African gender research. Gender, Economies and Entitlements in Africa draws extensively on feminist methodologies to discuss gender, economies and entitlements in Africa. It considers a series of themes that highlight how structural insensitivities, injustices and inequalities render the marginalisation of women in spite of their often-disproportionate contributions to the domestic and national economies in Africa. Issues explored are gender relations in the family; formal education and health; gender and access to resources; women's experience of citizenship; sexual identities and sex work; and globalisation, trade and gender. Throughout, the contributors argue that against phenomenal structural constraints, women as economic agents have consistently struggled to resist degradation.
