Summary: The article examines the Barbey relationship with the maxim and the moralistic tradition of the Grand Siècle from three points of view: his admiration for worldly culture of the 17th century whose maxim is a perfect expression; the poetics of the maxim to the test of Balzac's Maxims and Thoughts and detached Thoughts ; as well as the discursive status of the maxim in Aurevillian critical work, thus its rhetorical and argumentative value.--Translation of page 4 of cover by Classiques Garnier.
