the long version

Edited by Paulino Capdepón and Juan Jose Pastor, music professors at the University of Castilla -La Mancha, a group of experts and specialists from european and american universities has published a great monograph on Sebastián Durón (1660-1716), a prominent Spanish Baroque composer, born in the town of Brihuega. The publication aims to reflect on the personality and career of Sebastián Durón, and Spanish music of that time. Thus, for example, different themes have been studied to clarify and elucidate Durón’s biography and musical output in the context of contemporary European music: in this sense are studied and analyzed its contribution to the music theater (Martín Moreno, Pastor, Hart and Acuña) from different points of view, his organ output (Jambou) or the musical atmosphere at the court of Queen Mariana of Neuburg, one of Durón’s protectress (Klauk). Also other articles are focused on aspects of Durón’s musical Spain and help us to understand better the cultural and musical atmosphere of that time: specifically chapters on the organist position (Pérez Mancilla) or the chapel master position (Capdepón), while other chapters are devoted to the personality of Alonso Xuárez, one of Durón’s teachers (de la Fuente), the royal festivities in Compostela (Villanueva), the plainchant composition in 17th century music (Ruiz), the study of the watermarks (García) and the epistolary exchange (Olarte) as research methods, or the theater companies in Madrid (Flórez). Jesús Villa Rojo, composer.
